Eric nodded, his shaggy blonde hair wagging like a dog's coat.
"I guess so," he heaved heavily. He hoped the Professor wasn't angry about the front lawn...
"Ladies first." He smiled dully, motioning with his hands toward the door. "I'll follow."

"Wuss," Midnight gave him a weak smile back. Then she drew in a breath and opened the door. There sat Professor Xavier behind his desk. He looked almost suprised when she walked in, but then gave her a friendly smile.
"Ah, Ms. Adams," he said. "Come in and have a seat. And bring Mr. James along with you, as long as he promises not to destroy the office as well."
Midnight, as always, was suprised by his knowledge. She thought he couldn't see through her darkness, but then, maybe he could sense Eric before she put it in his mind. Midnight walked cautiously forward, heading toward a hardback chair, then glanced behind to make sure Eric was following.

"See," Eric whispered. "I hate telepaths." He made his way into the office, hiding slightly behind Marie. Normally, Chance wasn't afraid of anything, but telepathy, well, you might as well just hang him out to dry. Around telepaths he was utterly useless.

Midnight made a soft noise to acknowledge what Chance said and then seated herself gingerly on the edge of the chair. "Professor Xavier," she began in a rather meek tone. "I... I am not sure what happened. Apparently I can't remember anything before a few months ago. Not since we were captured by Weapon X at Alkali Lake..." She shivered slightly. "Eric says a lot has happened since then... what should I do?"
"Well, you could let me take a look at it," Professor Xavier offered, rolling around from behind the desk. He wanted to see what happened with her mind before he would tell her that she had become a raging maniac.
Midnight nodded and held one hand up next to her head. Darkness flowed out of her ear like smoke and disappared into her palm. "I'm ready," she said, taking a deep breath.
Xavier gently put his hands on both sides of her face, his first finger touching her temple on either side. "Just try to... relax," he murmered, his eyes already closed.
Memories flashed before him and he saw in replay the events at Weapon X... suddenly, a great darkness seemed to overwhelm the people in the replay. Strangly, Xavier shivered. The blackness... it seemed to be around him, to be smothering him... he tried to make his way through it but came to a cliff edge. Jumping over it took his own advanced telepathic powers and he wondered at the meaning of it. Then, he saw more memories, but this time it wasn't a picture perfect replay. They seemed to be blotched or blurred or darkened. Maybe this was the missing part of her mind... There she was, forming unnaturally out of the shadows at the mall...kissing Eric...the part where she came to him for help and the sentinal formed on his lawn and destroyed his office...in a dress going to a dance...blurred darkness ending with Midnight falling to the ground, holes in her belly... As the memories wore on, many more were stained with darkness until finally it just seemed one black tape. That must be when she was crazy... up till now. It seemed that the darkness was having very little effect on her brain, most of it severed along with those memories.
Xavier's eyes flashed open and he removed his hands to lean back.
Midnight was breathing hard, her hands gripping the chair beside her and her dark eyes glowing. They calmed down, like a fire going out, when Xavier stopped.
"It seems that your mind has been... factured. Those memories are separated in more than just a mental block. I can reach them, but I don't know if I can reconnect them... or if I would even want to. It seems that most of your darkness resides there, a darkness that even you cannot control. During the time that you cannot remember, the darkness... took over you... under the alias of the Shadow Spinner. It seemed to have a complete mind of its own. I am still not certain how you came to... separate it... from yourself and I will look into it, but otherwise, I would advise you give up those memories and be careful. If you feel the darkness seeming to control you, come to me."
Midnight sat there, her mouth hanging slightly open. Finally, she managed to speak: "I was... I was a huge black hole that infected Caity? I was some maniac calling herself Shadow Spinner?" Suddenly ever her own thoughts seemed the enemy. Which were actually her own and which were the Shadow Spinner's?
"I suggest you also apologize to Jasper Jones when and if you see him. Seems he got a large dose of your powers," the Professor gave a polite smile and then rolled back around his desk. "I'm glad you stopped by. I will be investigating your memory loss as well as your powers, Marie. Come in again if you need anything."
Then Xavier turned his piercing blue gaze to Eric. "And Mr. James, please don't bring any more of your friends to call on the Institute. I would prefer it if they came one at a time and after this incident, arragned appointments as well, so we can be ready to meet them if they should need it."
((Read the post in Clubs: A Little Ballroom Out of the Way. It is after this event and shows when Midnight gets her memory back, so don't worry about making it happen here.))

((right, sorry I was gone for so long))
Eric's face contorted, it was like he wanted to say something, but his mind wasn't letting him. Finally, it blurted out like word vomit.
"I want to join the X-Men." He gasped, his shiled powering up and knocking him back a few feet. Had he really said it? Oh man...what was going to happen next?

Xavier raised an eyebrow. What was the boy's motive? For most people, he would take them at face value, even some of the members of the Brotherhood, like he had with Lance Alvers before, but the boy had just attacked the Institute. Maybe it was the reappearance of the normal Midnight. The way the two stood, it seemed as though they were both depending on each other as the only things they could hold on to. But beyond body language, Midnight's barrier kept him from seeing into the boy's mind. "Well Mr. James, I would be happy to have you. You know that we accept anyone who wants to come here. However, from your recent activities, I feel that I would be justified in asking for a motive. Most students come visit my office instead of starting a fight on the mansion lawn."
"I hope you aren't doing this for me," Midnight whispered. Even just a school like this would probably be hard on the freedom-loving person that was Eric. That, and it seemed that many people had a reason for a grudge against him if not both of them. But the thought of going through it herself frightened Midnight. Even so, she didn't want Eric to join the school only because he wanted to protect her. She wanted him to join it because that is what he wanted to do.

Eric gave Midnight a sideways glance as if to say, "don't worry babe, I got this." Then, turning to the Professor he began to speak,
"Okay, I know this looks bad, I mean I know I just attacked the front lawn and everything, and I mean, I promise to clean it up and all, but the truth is, the Brotherhood just really wasn't doing it for me. I mean, all my life I've hated humans, hated the fact that they could treat mutants so badly...it made me sick." His mind was racing, and half of him wanted to turn and run screaming, back to the grungy old Brotherhood mansion, but then he remembered, the mansion had been taken over by the Hellfire Club. Nothing was the same, the loosely strung together Brotherhood had become a sort of evil empire, and Chance had never considered himself evil.
"It's just that," he continued, "I'm done with running from my past. I need to be here, with Marie, in the institute. I mean, look what the Brotherhood has given me so far, a big fat nothing. All I know is, Midnight gives me something I've never felt before, and to throw that all away, for a stupid group of idiots...it just doesn't make sense."
"So, Professor, if you can find a spot for me, I'd like to be an X-Man."

"Well, Eric, I think I can understand your reasoning. You do know that the X-Men are dedicated to saving lives, including those of humans? If you can get past that, I think that we can find room for you. You will have to speak to the team captains about getting a place on the team and training is currently in progress for newer members... however, considering your background, I hope you aren't expecting a warm welcome. With time, though, I believe my X-Men can overcome their grudge. All I ask is that you overcome your's. About humans."
Midnight gave Eric a soft smile at his words and gently took his hand in her's.

He tried to smile back, tried to push the idea that humans were evil out of his head. After all, some humans had to be good, otherwise Marie wouldn't fight so hard.
"Thank you Professor," he said, his green eyes glimmering with determination. "I'll make this work." Then, he turned to Midnight and smiled. "You'll find me a team right babe?" He said it trying to sound cool and collected, but it was too hard for him to hide his nervousness. He hoped he wasn't on Caity's team...

Some things about people could change. Some could not. Midnight wondered if Eric's hatred for humans was one of those things.
"Then welcome to the Institute. I am sure it will be beneficial to you," the Professor said kindly.
"I don't know about teams, Eric," Midnight said as they started to leave the room. "They have been kind of slack recently and then were reshuffled a bit so now we have a bunch of new people on teams and older ones changing... We would have to see where there is room. I think one team doesn't have any members and others may be full... but that depends on the limits they are placing... and I don't know. I'm really not a good person to ask about it." Then she smiled up at him. As usual, her sincere smile made her face light up in a way that was not normally seen on her. "I'm glad you joined, Eric."

Eric nodded, his fears about joining the X-Men seemed to melt away as he stared into Midnight's eyes. "Yeah, me too. I just hope that everyone else feels the same way as you." He looked around at all the students who were making their way around the institute, talking and hanging out. Unconsciously his shield activated, reacting to his sudden panic.
"This is the right thing to do...right?"

"How can I tell, Eric?" Midnight asked, gripping his hand tighter. "After what I heard about myself and Caity's reception, I'm almost as scared as you. I can't tell you what is right or wrong in this situation. Would it be right to stay with the self-proclaimed 'Brotherhood of Evil Mutants'? I don't know. But as long as you are hear, neither of us will be alone."

Eric's heart skipped a beat, reminding him why he loved Marie so much. "Yeah, besides, at least they have better food here. I mean, do you know what we ate at the Brotherhood? Oh wait, I couldn't tell you, we never had any food." He laughed and squeezed her hand tighter. "Come on, let's go find somewhere to crash. I'm tired. Attacking the institute really takes a lot out of you."

"Maybe you should work out more," Midnight teased, sticking her tongue out at Eric. "And that is a nice thing about Xavier's. We have funding. So there are also sheets on the beds and a laundry service." She smiled, actually being happy, even at the disturbing prospect of wandering through the school not knowing exactly what she had done or who she had scared. "Somewhere to crash... well, I could take you back to my room, except I don't know the policy on boys-in-girl's-rooms yet... once you have a team, you will be assigned a room. Hope that happens soon. Otherwise, we can just head to the livingroom and hope nobody is there. You aren't going to be able to sleep there long, though. Somebody is bound to remember the leader of the attack on our lawn."

"I thought you X-people were all into forgiveness." He mused, tugging at his shirt, trying to show Midnight his muscles. "Come on then, let's go find a couch or something. I'll get a team later. I really don't care which one, so long as I'm not with that Syphon chick..."

"Xavier says that, and that is what he expects from his students. I am one of his students and I am afraid I don't give them that much credit. Some of them, maybe, but not all of them." Midnight was the type of person who might forgive some things easily, but other grudges she could hold to the end of the earth.
Midnight didn't catch the fact that Chance was trying to show off, but she did notice his muscles. It was a good thing he had muscles. Midnight had a rather unfair pedjudice against anyone fat. She knew it wasn't nice to be like that and some fat people were very nice, but even so... She was actually impressed. Despite what she said, it didn't look like he needed to work out.
"To the couch it is, then," she said, leading the way down the paneled hall with rare-looking decorations on either side. It did give the school a dignified look, but with the Insititute getting attacked and kids with crazy powers, it did not seem the most functional decoration plan.
"Yeah, it would be hard to be on a team with Syphon. She really didn't like you and seemed mad at me... I wouldn't want to be on her team."

"Well, with my luck, she won't be!" He laughed. "This place is enormous," he said, eyeing the walls and gazing into open doorways. "Seriosly...where does all this money come from?" He shook his long blond hair, trying to get a handle on the decision he had just made. Was this right? He sure hoped so...

"You know what, I never really thought about where the money came from. Normally, I would say that it is expensive tuition, but I came here a pauper and haven't paid anything for it. So I have no idea. Maybe Xavier inherited it, or maybe he is recieving government funding..." she laughed. "No idea."
