Aria tugged at her hair nervously. Was this really the place she had heard about? She looked up at the sign, which reinforced that, indeed, she was at Professor Xavier's school. She swallowed and took a step inside, compelled by an unknown force.
Aria looked around, scanning for people. She crossed her arms over her chest and seriously started to consider going back. What was she doing here? She knew what she was- a mutant. That didn't mean that everyone else had to know. She could hide, be like everyone else. She didn't look different, apart from the blue hair, easliy dyed.
Something inside her knew that living a life in hiding wasn't really living at all. She had heard about this school. She didn't know why, but she got the feeling that if anyone could help her, Xavier could.
Besides, she didn't even understand her power and its potential danger. Aria wouldn't be able to live with herself if she caused some harm to someone- especially if it was preventable.
Now I only have one problem, she thought as she gazed around her in confusion. Where to go from here?

"A B C D E F G..."
The smooth tenor voice drifted out from beneath a tree. There, standing on his hands as he sung, was a slender boy. His slender but muscular arms strained to hold up his weight, though it was not much.
"H I J K L M N O P..."
White blonde hair swung by shoulders, revealing a rosy cheeked face. The boy's thin lips were parted as he sung, his brow furrowed with concentration.
"Q R S, T U V W X Y and Z."
He pushed up, balancing his weight on one hand. With one hand planted firmly on the grass, he lifted the other hand. His black nail varnish sparkled in the sun.
"Now I sang my A B C's. Next time won't you sing with me."
He lowered his hand to the ground. With a grunt, his elbows bent and he sprung to his feet. His forest green eyes were dazed and unfocused. "Damn, that makes me dizzy." The boy grunted in his tenor voice with a thick French accent as he flopped down on the grass.
His name was Artemis Kalere. At 15, he stood at five foot one and weighed 110 pounds, though most of that was muscule. But what he lacked in size, he made up for in power. Artemis controled the weather, though he tended to refrain from using his full strength. He sighed as he sat, crosseyed and rubbing his head.
Why had he been so stupid as to stand on his hands for so long?
The boy was dressed simply enough; a black under-shirt clad his upper half and a pair of baggy jeans his lower. His feet were bare. He sighed again, looking out across the grounds as he licked his dry lips.

It was the singing that woke Midnight up from her dozing in the tree. It was a familiar song, heard many a time from her childhood. That wasn't really what she noticed. The voice that sang was sweet to her ears and she smiled softly has she listened. Only too soon did the song end. She heard a rustle and glanced down when the thick French accent sounded to see a solid young man with bleach-blond hair lying in the grass.
"I would sing with you next time, but I'm afraid I'm not as good as you," she said, making her presence known for the first time. She was almost hidden in the trees, her black cargo pants and black tank top blending with the shadows of the large lindin leaves. Then her dark eyes caught movement across the lawn. "Who is that?" she murmered almost inaudibly, peering through the sunshine to see a girl walking to the Xavier Institute.

Artemis fell back, staring up at the girl in the trees. His thin arms tucked under his head and his shirt riding up his stomach slightly, he smiled slightly. "It wasn't that good," He said in his French accented voice, "And I wouldn't know. Why don't you ask?"

Aria couldn't even begin to guess where to find Professor Xavier in the mansion that stood before her. It would probably be a day or two before anyone even realized Aria was there, and by then she'd have died of starvation, she thought sarcastically.
Besides that, what was she supposed to say to Professor Xavier? Hi, I'm a mutant... What's my power, you ask? Well, funny story- see, I'm not really sure. I think it has something to do with water...
Maybe there was still time to turn back and pretend none of this had happened. Aria thought of her parents and almost burst into tears. No, she thought. If she could get some sort of grip on her power, maybe she could prevent other fires and other people losing their parents.
Aria paused, she thought she had faintly heard someone singing. She stopped, feeling like some sort of criminal, trespassing on private property.

"I liked it," Midnight replied to the person below. "I haven't heard a guy with his voice changed ever sing it though. Except maybe the Cookie Monster." It felt strange to talk about something so normal and familiar. It didn't seem like she had done that since she became a mutant. "Where are you from? I might be able to guess your accent, but I can only guess well-known countries, to the USA that is."
Meanwhile, she started slipping down branches and scrambling over others. She kept glancing at the girl who looked lost and then back down to the man below so that she wouldn't fall on him. Finally she was hanging from the tree, lean muscles holding her arms bent. Then she stretched out, straightened her arms, and dropped. She landed softly in a crouch at the base of the tree and started to fumble for her sunglasses to cover her eyes before she stopped herself. She could look like herself for once.

"France. Metz, to be exact." The boy said, keeping his eyes on the girl across the lawn. "Should we invite her over?" He asked.

Aria heard voices somewhere. She looked around for the source. She saw two people in the shade of a tree and smiled. She wondered what it would be like to have friends again. It wasn't in her nature to approach people uninvited, but maybe they would know how to navigate in this school so foreign to her.

"Invite her? We weren't exactly having a private party," Midnight smiled, then wondered how much of American humor he would understand or if that even constituted as American humor. It was difficult knowing what to do with foreigners, even though she felt like one half the time.
Shading her eyes from the sun, Midnight looked out over the lawn at the girl again. She was smiling and seemed to be thinking about coming over to them. "You, new girl!" Midnight yelled, and waved one arm. "Want to come into the shade?"

Aria looked behind her. Were they calling at her? No one else was around and she was new, so she hesitantly walked over. She felt very self-concious. She smiled timidly and waved shyly, "Hi. I didn't mean to trespass, but I'm looking for Xavier."

Artemis smiled, waving. "Bonjour," He said happily, "You're not trespassing." He looked up at Midnight at the mention of the professor. He hadn't met him personally, so maybe this girl had.

"Hi," Midnight gave a shy smile back. She was actually shy most the time and now that a girl she didn't know joined their group, she reverted back to that mode. "Yeah, you aren't trespassing. Everybody is welcome." She glanced downward again and saw the boy looking at her as if expecting something. Oh yeah, Xavier. "Xavier lives here. He is probably in his office." She bit her lip nervously, wondering if she would be asked to lead the girl there.

"I just assumed that was where I was supposed to go," she replied quietly. "I'm new here."
