Dark waves of black hair caressed her shoulder as she glazed over the rooftops from her sentry post. Her lavander eyes caught everything she needed and she jumped from her post, hitting the sidewalk below with a thud.
Her name was Amelia, one of the last mutants left on Earth since Apocalypse had won. She was a hunter as well as a survior. She hadn't known her parents, but she knew she had gotten her powers from them.
"Hey Health," Amelia said to her friend, a bushy hair girl that was working on a computer system monitering Apocalpse's movements throughout the city. Health didn't know her own name let alone her parents but she was also one of the smartest people she ever met.
"Did you take down the patterns?" Health asked looking at Amelia from behind her glasses, her yellow eyes glowing slightly.

"Hey everyone!" a little boy ran in, carrying a dead bird. "I found some food!" His cheeks were hollow and all the baby fat that normally graced children his age was gone, thin muscles showing through tan skin, and his belly sticking out. His eyes were demon eyes, all black except for the red iris in the middle, but they danced with excitement common to children who don't understand how bad off they are.
He was followed by an older girl who gave him a slight smile before sitting down in a corner, the picture of tired. She set down a bow and the two remaining arrows, showing that the boy hadn't actually 'found' the bird. The girl had dark brown hair with the exception of a white streak falling down the side. "Jesse, give it to someone who can cook it," she said softly. Her green eyes were heavy and she slowly closed them, falling asleep where she was.

"I've got it," Thera said coming out of the kitchen and taking the bird. She looked at the little boy with kind eyes, kind green eyes. A ginger curl had fallen out of her braid and she swept it away from her face, "Would you like to learn how to cook?" she asked the boy.

Jesse smiled wide, but then his eyes dropped and he looked at the ground. "I dunno know how it would help. We don't usually have anyfing to cook." He then looked back up at her, with hope in his eyes. "Do you fink dere would be somefing else to cook some other time?" he said, a beautiful smile spreading over the face of the boy, showing his two missing teeth.

"Of course with a big strong hunter such as yourself we'll have plenty to eat," Theia said picking up the boy, "We have some carrot in the store room that I think you can give me a hand with."
"Yes, and Apocalypse knows what he's doing with the cameras. If it wasn't for the bracelets you made we would have been goners by now," Amelia said sitting on the armrest of the chair next to her other friend, "so how bad is the game hunting now?" she asked.
"Figures, the bastard hasn't made anything else for us easier," Health cursed darkly.

Jasmine started awake again to look up at Amelia with tired eyes. "There isn't much that can live out there. I don't know how he can keep the Loyal fed unless he can create food with his powers." Shaking her head, she stood back up, brushing off the coarse dress. Dresses had been easier to make than pants.

Amelia sighed and patted her firend's hair, "We're lucky that Health can use her powers to grow a little food for us or we'd be in a lot more trouble," she commented swinging her foot a little.
"Let her sleep," Health said, "She's been up since four this morning I heard her leave. Beside I have no idea how I'm able to make things stay alive out here," Health said looking back at Jasmine and sighing. They had known each other their entire life, Jasmine was a few months older then her and looked out for Health when they were younger.

Jasmine, often called just Jazz, gave her friend a tired smile and picked up the bow and arrows. Guns were too hard to come by and could be heard over distance. Making her way down through the building, she entered a dark room filled with bunks. Finding a particular one, Jasmine pulled a notebook out from under the mattress. Most paper was hard to come buy, but even among the wreckage, some supplies had been found. Things had been found that made Jazz wonder what life had been like before she was born. Taking the notebook to the stairwell, she wrote in it what had happened that day, her thoughts, and added another section to a story she was writing. It was one of the few things that comforted her in times like these. Finishing up, she flipped the notebook shut and returned it to its spot under the mattress before plopping down on her bed and falling asleep as soon as she closed her eyes.

Jesse carefully picked the feathers off of the dead bird, which was also skinny. He might have felt sorry for it at any other time, but the pain in his belly was enough to make him ignore that feeling. Carrying it carefully over to Theia, he asked, "When will it be ready to eat?" while he went back over to cut the carrot up into pieces.

Two fourteen year old girls dropped from trees into view. One with dark brown hair, streaked with black. The other had lighter brown hair with blondish streaks. Lena, the lighter haired girl, brushed her hair out of her face as she approached them. Her sister, Kris, followed behind her, looking quite pleased with her catch. Three fresh fish were carefully cradled in her arms, wrapped in a piece of purple cloth.
"Sorry, guys. This was best I could do today. The fish are becoming more scarce." Kris said, gently setting the fish on the ground next to the fire, making sure they didn't get dirty.

"In about an hour," Theia smiled at the two girls that came in. She was the oldest in the group and acted as a stand in mother of all the orphans, "No, this is a feast what we have here, you girls have done every well," she said giving each of them a quick hug.
Amelia sunk down into the chair Jazz left and closed her eyes. She had about two hours before she had to go on patrol and she needed to catch up on her sleep.

"Thanks, Theia." Lena smiled softly and sat down on the ground, legs crossed. Kris slid to the ground beside her, legs stretched out in front of her. "So, how are the troops holding out today?" Kris asked, indicating the other kids around them. She and her sister had been absent for most of the day, because they had been searching for food to bring back.

"Fish," Jesse said happily, rocking back and forth on his heels. Then he leaped up and saluted. "The troops are doing fine, ma'am!" he bellowed out, and would have maintained a good impression of a soldier if his face hadn't cracked into a smile. Plopping down next to Lena, he said, "Tell me a story. Tell me what it is like to have a mom." He had an inkling in the back of his head that he had had one once, but he couldn't understand that thought.

Kris grinned a his imitation of a soldier and nodded to her sister. Lena smiled gently at the boy. "Well, our mom was a beautiful, brave General in the army. She made it possible for Kris and I to live." Lena began, starting to improvise because she honestly had no memory of her mother. "A mom will always pick you up when you fall down. She's always there for you, kind of like a shield. She protects you, feeds you and makes you feel safe and warm. She'll keep you dry when it's raining, or keep you cool when it's really hot outside. A mom will help you with anything, and she's there for you no matter what."

"I wish I had a mother," Jesse said sadly. Then he looked up at Theia. "You are gonna feed me, how are you not a mother?" He knew that she wasn't his mother, but at the same time he wanted to define mother and figure out why she wasn't his mother. "I think my mother had red and black eyes," he said, doubt on his face. That memory had come to him in a flash, more of a picture really.

"You're lucky my mother gave me up as soon as I was born," Theia said before smiling at the small boy and picking him up, "But deary until we find your real mum, I'll act as one!" she laughed kissing Jesse's forehead and spinning him around.
Amelia drifted into a dream, it was a dream she rarely had but enjoyed it. She heard the sound of a harp, and a pair of strong arms held her as a woman in purple with lond blond hair played. Occasionally the woman would glance in Amelia's direction and smile.
Health's yellow eyes glanced over at her friend and sighed, leaning back from the computer she rubbed her eyes and took a break. She pushed her glasses back onto her nose, no wonder her sight was going bad, how much time she spent looking at the computer screen.

Jesse laughed happily as she spun him. He seemed happier then some kids in the pre-Apocolypse world had seemed while he had much less to be happy about, simply enjoying the small things in life.

Theia had always enjoyed the sound of children laughing, maybe that's why she had found this place for them, to hide, to plan, to hope. Wasn't that all they had now, hope? Theia would sings these children to sleep when she was younger. Tell them what little she remembered before Apocalypse took over.

"So, Thei, do you want some help cooking?" Kris asked, a small ball of fire blooming in the palm of her hand. Despite the fact that Lena was the one who told stories and was more sensitive than she was, Kris had always been better at culinary activities.
