((*grins* Lights go bye-bye))
There was a slight unintentional spark from Hannah's left hand and then....the room was plunged into darkness, save for the dwindling light from the oncoming sunset. "Sorry! I didn't mean to!" Hannah sounded terrified again. Her parents always punished her when she slipped up with her powers. When the lights flickered back to life a moment later, Hannah had vacated her seat and retreated to a corner of the kitchen.

Jean looked up when the lights went out and smiled when she heard a few of the students talking. "Cool! Who did that?"
"It wasn't me."
"Yeah right, Tommy. Just admit it!"
"It wasn't!"
"Sure, whatever. Just turn them back on." Jean shook her head and looked for Hannah when the lights came back on. She found her in a corner and frowned.
"Hannah? What's wrong?" Jean went over to her and sat in front of her. "You didn't do anything bad, sweetie. It's okay. Everyone here has powers that sometimes do things they don't want them to do." She reached out to pull the girl into a hug.

When Jean reached for her, Hannah closed her eyes and flinched, her body and muscles tensing. But Jean didn't seem to be planning to hurt her, so she slowly opened her green eyes, trying to understand what Jean was trying to do.

Jean gave her a smiled and pulled her in for a hug. "Hannah I have no idea what has happened to you to make you so scared, but you don't have to be scared here. I promise no one wants to hurt you. Especially not me," Jean told her gently.

So far, she liked Jean the best. At least she felt safer here, at this strange Institute, than she had ever felt back home or on the streets. It was weird, though. Usually she got in a lot of trouble when she accidently used her powers.

"Now why don't we go finish our food? Hmm, does that sound good?" Jean asked, looking at Hannah.

Hannah blinked, still wearing that confused expression. At the mention of the food, Hannah smiled and got to her feet, happily getting into her chair and continuing to eat her pasta.

Jean smiled when she jumped up and went back to eating her dinner. She got up and walked over to her own seat and sat back down. "I made a fresh apple pie this morning and if you would like you can have a slice after you finish your dinner and we get you settled."

"Pie?" Again, something she had only read about and had never actually seen. Hannah looked up from her spaghetti. Of course, she didn't know how strange it was for a girl her age to have never seen spaghetti or pie.

Jean smiled and nodded, "Yes, pie. You'll like it, I promise. Maybe I'll put some vanilla ice cream with it." Jean's heart ached that this girl was forbidden all the simple pleasures in life. How sad to have a mom that never baked something as simple as a pie.

Hannah looked excited at the mention of ice cream. Now ice cream was familiar to her. The child returned to chowing down on her spaghetti.

Well, at least she knew what I was talking about that time. "Do you go to school Hannah?" Jean asked as she continued to eat her own food.

And the familiar perplexed expression slid onto her face as she shook her head. Again, she had read about school, but had never been. Hannah had read about a lot of things and places she had never been or seen.

What wonderful parents. "Well, we will have to get you in a class as soon as your ready. This will help you meet other kids your age."

Hannah nodded, though she didn't understand what Jean was talking about. With that she finished off the last of her spaghetti. Another downside to her treatment was malnourishment. Her abilites gave her a very fast metabolism, what with the transformation of animals.

"Would you like more?" Jean asked after Hannah had finished her food. "There's a lot more over on the stove."

"Pie?" Hannah asked simply, looking eager to try something new.

"Sure, pie it is," Jean said taking Hannah's plate and placing it in the sink then grabbing a new one. She sliced a piece of the apple pie that she had made earlier and then took the vanilla ice cream out of the freezer and spooned a scoop on top of the pie. "Here you go," Jean said as she set the plate down in front of Hannah with a fresh fork.

Hannah uttered a small, "Thank you," before digging in happily. She now felt no need to test it to mak sure it was safe to eat. She was beginning to see the older girl as more of a sister or almost mother-type figure. It would take more time for her to figure out that Scott was just as nice.

Jean sat and finished her pasta and watched as Hannah enjoyed the pie and ice cream. She hadn't poked around this one so that meant she was beginning to trust Jean a little. That was good.
